ABS and ABN brakes are commonly called safety brakes because they will stop a rotating shaft even if power is cut off. They are widely used in automatic hoists, conveyors, cranes, winders and automated storage systems to stop operations, whether the materials are being transported vertically or horizontally.

Other applications include machine tools, especially automatic lathes and vertical lathes, to stop and hold moving parts on the work table.
